In today’s day and age, most items for the home are now being mass produced. We all want to be able to call something our very own. It’s not enjoyable to go to another person’s front door and see the very same furniture in their home as we have in ours. It’s always nice to feel like our own furniture is original and unique.

Achieving this can be difficult. It is quite expensive to have our furniture and home decor custom made. On the other hand, there are several tricks to help you personalize your home decor. You only need available time, color schemes, and your own creativity. There is no need to hire your own interior designer either.

Here are a few tricks to help you:

1. First, you need to do something different with the old furniture or art work you possess. You don’t have to create every piece. If you have a piece of metal artwork packed away in your storage, you can spice it up and hang it back on your living room wall in no time. Before you do this, you will need to update this item. There are various metal treatments available which will allow you to change the effects of the metal. You can shade it if you would like.

2. Instead of purchasing cheap posters or other wall hangings, you can use your favorite photos instead. Today’s technology allows you to edit and enlarge photos easily. You can do the same with other pieces of art you have. Frames can be custom made or you can purchase an inexpensive one. by doing this, your wall decorations will be different from everyone else’s.

3. Instead of buying brand new curtains, you can make your own. While ready made curtains are much easier, you can combine two different fabrics that match the inside of your house and sew the layers together. By doing this, you are creating your own personalized look for your home.

4. Home accessories can be arranged personally. By looking through various home decorating magazines, you can get a great deal of inspiration. There are many programs which feature home decorators on TV you can watch as well. By doing your research, you can learn how to arrange your own accessories. Your personal touch will be implemented at the same time.

5. You can create your own personalized color scheme too. Many interior designers urge their customers to create their own color scheme. This is a great help in personalizing your own unique style. You will know which color to use when you are updating your old furniture. The color wheel is very helpful in doing this.

While not every person has the patience to personalize their own home, this task does not need to be tedious, expensive or difficult. By using the items you already have, you can add your own personal style to the scheme.

Many of the articles we have all read in the press are based on older technologies and dont reflect the current market for low energy light bulbs. Earlier this year the phase out of general purpose household bulbs began. The first to go was the good old General purpose household bulb, 100w/150w bulbs that have lit more rooms throughout the years than any bulb on the market. There was mass hysteria, people bulk buying 100w lamps to ensure there home lighting wasnt affected in anyway. Little old ladies buying 20 bulbs to last their lifetime, sad but true. The general public were not happy, It doesnt give the same light, It flickers, I have to wait 10 minutes for it to come on.

Because of the phase out proposals a selection of new lamps became available they generally consist of the following:

Compact Fluorescent

These energy efficient lamps are an excellent choice for table lamps and ceiling pendants where the lamp is not visible. The lamps quickly get to their maximum output. Many are designed to closely mirror the size of a standard general purpose lamp.

When using compact fluorescent lamps in place of conventional lamps in your home lighting the following table is a guide to the equivalent wattages:

Ordinary BulbsEnergy Saving Equivalent
25w6w
40w8-11w
60w13-18w
100w20-25w

Retro Fit Low Energy

This type of lamp is available to suit most home lighting common lamp holders (BC, ES, SES, and GU10). It is still a fluorescent lamp but the control gear is housed inside of the lamp. They tend to be more aesthetically pleasing to the eye and are available in the more common shapes, candle, golf ball and gls and varying wattages. A guide for equivalent wattages is below:

Ordinary BulbsRetro Fit Lamp
25w5-7w
40w8-10w
60w11-14w
75w15-17w
100w18-22w
150w23-27w

Energy Savers

These lamps are halogen versions of the popular home lighting lamps. Primarily the ones affected by the phase out. The lamps are clear, and contain a halogen lamp instead of the normal tungsten filament. They give the same light output as the lamps they are replacing but use less power. It generally represents a saving of approximately 30%, although not as efficient as the compact fluorescent lamps or retro fit lamps it is still a substantial saving and of course it has other benefits. These lamps will look fantastic in a crystal chandelier as the halogen aspect will make the crystal sparkle. Versions of these lamps are already available and are sufficiently efficiency rated to survive the phase out until at least 2012.

We have all been to weddings and gotten the common wedding favors : the candied almonds, the candles, the picture frames. And while they were all very nice, you’ve got the chance to use your wedding favor as a way to say something about yourselves as a couple with a novel wedding favor that may always remind your guests of you.

To choose what type of unique wedding favors you’re going to pick, you want to have a look at what you want it to say about you as a couple. What sort of interests do you have? Are you an outdoorsy couple who is always going on a hike? Or are you a coffee connoisseur who can’t go without their premium blend in the morning? Do the 2 of you spend all your extra time and money travelling? Or would you prefer to just curl up with a good book? These are the cues you may use to choose what type of unique wedding favors you’re going to choose.

For the outdoorsy type, you can pick a unique wedding favor that brings to mind the outside, like leaf candles or coasters, or you could go with the hiking theme, and give people carabiner key chains. If you like coffee, you can give folk coffee scented candles, or coffee accessories. The travel-lover could give away suitcase-shaped boxes crammed with candies as wedding favors, and the book-lover could give away bookmarks that suited the theme of their wedding.

Attempt to find something in your wedding favors that provides something useful for your guests. And yes, while candles and picture frames are mostly ornamental, perhaps the candle releases scent and light and the picture frame may be employed to display a favorite picture. I got a crystal swan as a wedding favor once, and even though it was absolutely gorgeous and looked great set up on the reception tables, it actually failed to go with anything I owned or serve any purpose, and it shortly got put out of view.

The key to giving your guests unique wedding favors that they will love is mixing the personal with the helpful. Your guests are at you wedding to support you and to be witness to your stipulation of your love for one another ; they might love wedding favors that both reminds them of you, and that they can use for years yet to come. And while that sometimes is a candle or picture frame, don’t be afraid to think outside the box to come up with unique wedding favors.

The meltdown in the economy and the crisis in confidence couldn’t have come at a worse time. Have you been feeling stretched by the financial pressure? If you’re facing tough buying decisions, the responsibilities of the holiday season may even be getting you down. These are challenging times. This year, in more ways than one, you just have to let go of the idea of a perfect Christmas, Hanukah or Kwanzaa.

Even though it’s important to honor the tradition of giving, the accumulation of material things can’t hold a candle to the gift that matters most. Bringing cheer to others is a great way to cheer yourself up as well. And you can do it without breaking into your savings account. With the holidays fast approaching, you certainly don’t want more pressure. So follow these practical tips and keep stress in check as you focus on more joy and less stuff:

1.Give the gift of connection. Put heart in your relationships. Arrange a regular weekly date with your parents. Invite them out to lunch, a museum or the movies. Send a card to someone with whom you’ve lost contact. Enclose a recent family photo, your email address and a promise to keep in touch. Drive an elderly neighbor to the grocery store, a doctor’s appointment or the shopping mall.

2.Give to a worthy cause. Get the family or a group of friends together and spend a couple of hours at a homeless shelter. Pass forward gifts you’ve never used. Or bring some toys or clothes that are in good shape. Buy a small present for a street person you pass regularly and make eye contact when you give it. Put a big smile on your face and help cook the holiday dinner at a soup kitchen. Make a donation to Aunt Sue’s favorite charity; every gift counts no matter how much you spend.

3.Give of yourself. Enjoy time with your friends by inviting them over for an evening of fun. Organize a potluck dinner and have them bring their signature dish. Cut down on expenses by exchanging memories instead of presents. Or express yourself and create some of your holiday gift items. Make a coupon book filled with orders for good deeds. Add a personal touch by baking decorative cookies with the kids. Show others you care with an IOU to babysit so they can have a much needed night out.

4.Give to yourself. Take some down time over the holidays. For a couple of hours each day, try not to focus on your problems. Curl up with a great book from the library, watch the ballgame with your teenagers or take your grandkids to the park. Enjoy peace of mind by paying down your debts. Hold back from buying lots of gifts or taking the family on an expensive outing. Decide together how to spend a fun and relaxing day. Your family will understand and grow from the experience.

The holidays don’t always have to look like a Norman Rockwell painting. You create more stress for yourself if you stick to old routines and operate on automatic pilot. Begin to lay the groundwork for change in your gift giving rituals. As you can see, it doesn’t have to cost you anything but time. And when money is tight and life is challenging, connection and support mean the most.

It will be a gift to yourself when you recreate the joy of simpler days. Small changes can represent a new beginning. Take heart as you give a little that feels like a lot. And in these hard times, that’s a good lesson for all of us.

Gifts have always been a symbol of expressing love and appreciation. Inviting friends on a party and having them leave with empty hands, doesn’t that sound too selfish? You do want to express your gratitude to them for showing up and the best way to do that is presenting them a very lovely party favor; something that is adorable yet inexpensive at the same time.

Some people prefer gifts that are erratic and humor some to get their guest’s smiling and laughing in no time while others prefer things that are sentimental and warm to serve them as a constant reminder of the cherished celebration. Party favors need not be expensive items, with a little imagination you can come up with many ideas to give away the most lovely and cheap gifts. Party favors can give your celebration a complete twists; making it a complete disaster or the best in town.

The very first step to buying your party favors is to manage your budget and know how much you are willing to spend on it. You don’t need to buy expensive items if your budget doesn’t allow you to but remember to compromise on quantity than quality. Having done that you need to decide what you want to give as a favor, the items may vary from an inexpensive chocolate bar to an expensive champagne bottle. But the best option is to go with your theme and event. Most popular items to give on a birthday are chocolates, goodies bag, notebooks, mini gumball machines, fortune cookies, coloring kit and a lot more stuff. On a wedding party you could go for palm plants, mini card holders, hearts candy, silk fans, vases, confetti daisies, platters etc. It’s always a good idea to have someone decide the items with you.

The most important thing to remember when shopping for party favors is quantity. You don’t want to buy too many gifts which may end up in your attic or embarrass yourself if the gifts go short. Wait until your guests reply back with an RSVP and once you know how many friends would turn up, buy the favors without hesitation. Personalized glasses and tambourines are one of the best articles if you want to leave an impression on your guests.

Don’t give your guests items you wouldn’t want to have yourself or items you fear would go into the trash cans, gift things that people can enjoy and use. If you are creative enough create candle holders and card holders at home, let your imagination float. Hats with ribbons or pretty flowers are bound to catch the attention of a lady with taste. Make sure your party favors are simply lovable but does no harm to your budget.
